Costa Rica To Attend
Petrocaribe as Observer
Venezuela Foreign
Minister Nicolas Maduro
announced on Wednesday
that Costa Rica will
join regional
Petrocaribe alliance as
an observer.
An official Costa Rican
delegation will travel
to Venezuela to attend
the special Petrocaribe
summit and explore
possibilities to join
the initiative, that
seeks energy security
for its members, the
Costa Rican Foreign
Ministry said.
Maduro confirmed to
Venezolana de Television
the holding of the
meeting over the weekend
in Maracaibo, Zulia,
about 310 miles from
Caracas, expected to be
attended by about 17
government delegations.
We also expect Guatemala
to become a new member
of the alliance, as
formally requested by
President Alvaro Colom,
added Maduro.
He explained that the
meeting is expected to
discuss issues related
with world market and
current crude price.
The Council of Ministers
will be in session on
Saturday, July 12 and
heads of State will meet
the next day, he said.
Petrocaribe is an energy
cooperation agreement
initiated by Venezuela
to address asymmetries
in the access to fuels
with favorable exchange
mechanism among Latin
American nations.
The initiative was
initially signed three
years ago by 14
countries, including
Antigua and Barbuda,
Bahamas, Belize, Cuba,
Dominica, Grenada,
Guyana, Jamaica, the
Dominican Republic, St.
Kitts and Nevis and
Suriname.
