El Salvador FMLN Crits Deputy Pay
Presidential candidate of El Salvador for the opposition Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN), Mauricio Funes, criticized the salary raises of members of the Legislative Assembly.

In the beginning of his tour of the eastern region as part of his campaign for the forthcoming general elections in 2009, Funes insisted that, instead, the salaries of teachers, police and campesinos should be increased.

He added, also, that President Antonio Saca has lacked the courage to ask the deputies to return the money.

On this matter, he assured that FMLN deputies would return the money that would be deposited in a common fund of a public institution.

Saca announced that he would turn back the legislative measure that has been the source of criticism.

The controversial pay raise goes from 1,800 to 2,900 dollars a month.

The main electoral contender against the Alianza Republicana Nacionalista is the opposition FMLN that promotes Funes for the presidency and deputy Salvador Sanchez, as Vice President.
