Panamanian Left Demands Emergency Economic Plan
Panama's PAP (Popular Alternative Party), an active leftwing force in the country, called on the government to implement an emergency economic plan to curb the negative effects of US recession.

In a public communiqué, the PAP said the US mortgage crisis and high oil prices affect revenues in the Panama Canal.

The leftwing political organization, headed by Olmedo Belluch, denounced the decrease in the number of ships going through the Canal and a drop in revenues, a situation that might get worse in 2008.

The communiqué underlined that the Canal project is very expensive, so Panamanian tax payers would have to pay the cost.

Inflation, public debt, sustained underemployment and low income affect the Panamanian people, who demand an emergency treatment and special measures.

The PAP demanded a revision of the budget to enlarge the Panama Canal, a food security policy, frozen prices of the family shopping basket, a national energy plan and prioritized public expenditures in health and education.
