Guatemala Still Plagued by Violence
The homicide rate in Guatemala remained at 13 per day Monday, despite police operations in the so called red zones to fight delinquency and crime.

The 100 Day Security Plan has made it possible to make 1,314 arrests for diverse crimes, but we cannot hide the homicide rate continues at 12 or 13, senior director of National Civil Police Henry Lopez admitted.

According to Lopez, police actions are focused on 24 critical areas of this capital, as well as in the departments of Escuintla, Izabal, Quetzaltenango, Zacapa and Peten with the priority to significantly reduce crimes against life.

Nevertheless, since President Alvaro Colom took office January 14, 170 people in the country have died from violence, most of them from firearms, leading to speculation that the security plan has had more impact on media than crime rates.

In the last four years Guatemala has suffered a seemingly unstoppable wave of violence that has claimed the lives of 11,483 people.
