Heart and Lung Transplant Patient Doing Well
Four days after undergoing a multiple transplant, Mairen Álvarez opened her eyes and is started to breathe on her own on several occasions.

Doctors at the Hospital Calderón Guardia performed an historic transplant of a heart and lungs on the 21 year old girl.

Although Mairen is still in delicate condition, she is holding on to life and is showing positive signs.

"Her blood pressure and heart rate is within established limits, she is still on a ventilator, however, she is showing lung movement", explained Luis Paulino Hernández, medical director at the Calderón.

Marien received visitors on Monday, as her aunts made the 8 hour trip from San Vicente de Nicoya, Guanacaste, where the young girl is from.

The organs that are giving Mairen life were donated by the family of a traffic accident victim who died on Sunday, January 13.
