Tránsito Will Not Back
Down On Taxi Issue
Although taxi drivers
operating with old
license plates appealed
directly to Costa Rican
president, Oscar Arias,
who asked that the
parties to the dispute
sit down and talk,
Tránsito will not back
down.
Come Wednesday all taxi
operating with the "P"
license plates (SJP for
San José, AP for Aljueal,
etc) will have their
license plates
confiscated by Tránsito
(traffic) officials if
found circulating.
The move will affect
some 600 taxis that for
some reason or another
did not obtain the new
taxi plates all starting
with "T" (TSJ for San
José, TA for Alajuela,
for example).
The Ministerio de Obras
y Transportes (MOPT) has
made it clear that it
cannot do anything for
them and only an appeal
to the Sala
Constitucional
(Constitutional Court)
can slow down the
Tránsito action, as they
ask the magistrates of
the court to interceded
on their behalf.
The taxi drivers insist
that the MOPT can issue
them temporary permits
to allow them to
continue to operate.
However, MOPT vice
minister Viviana Martín,
assures that the article
the taxi drivers are
basing their arguments
on are only applicable
before the closing of
the process and not afte,
as is the case now.
The vice minister
indicated that she will
consult the legal
department of article 7,
subsection J of the Ley
7969, however, being a
lawyer herself,
considers that from a
legal point of view the
MOPT has acted properly.
