Experience Life in Fort
Collins

When Michelle Sanchez,
15, arrived in Fort
Collins earlier this
month, she and nine of
her classmates rushed
outside to play in the
snow.
“They went out to my
front yard and
immediately started
throwing snowballs at
each other,” said Kirk
Petty, the media
specialist at Lincoln
Junior High.
For many of the
students, who are on a
cultural exchange from
Costa Rica for three
weeks, it was their
first experience with
snow.
Lincoln and Poudre High
School students are
acting as hosts to 10
Costa Rican students,
who range in age from
15-18 and their teacher,
who are in Colorado to
experience the culture
and education in
America.
So far, the group has
visited Rocky Mountain
National Park, the Fort
Collins museum, played
laser tag at Fort Fun
and sat in on classes
with their hosts. They
plan to go skiing, visit
the Colorado history
museums and the National
Western Stock Show,
among other activities.
This is the first time
Lincoln has hosted
exchange students, and
Petty said he hopes the
Lincoln and Poudre
student hosts will be
able to visit Costa Rica
this summer to learn the
culture in the tropical
country just south of
Nicaragua in Central
America.
But for the time being,
the hosts, who are
mostly made up of
International
Baccalaureate students,
are getting a taste of
what it’s like to
experience Fort Collins
from the point of view
of a foreigner.
