Tránsito To Get Tough On
Drunk Drivers During
Palmares Festival
For those who are
thinking of drinking
during the Palmares
Festival and then
getting behind the wheel
of their car, the
Policía de Tránsito
assures that they will
be walking home, as the
operations around
Palmares will be ongoing
on a 24 hour basis.
Huanelgue Gutiérrez,
subdirector de la
Policía de Tránsito,
explained that some 140
Tránsito officials will
be working around the
clock beginning tomorrow
night when the lighting
ceremony and inaguration
of the festival takes
place.
However, it won't be
until Thursday morning
when the megabars,
chinamos and the full
festival actitivies
commences.
Gutiérrez explained that
there will be stop
checks at various points
in and around Palmares,
the largest of the
checks will be at the
Naranjo toll booth where
Tránsito expects to stop
just about every vehicle
going through the area.
In addition to the
checking alcohol
consumption, Tránsito
will also be ensuring
the the 2008 Marchamo is
paid and drivers have a
valid drivers license,
failing which they will
confiscate license
plates.
Gutiérrez added that if
a driver if the vehicle
is not detained at one
stop, another ticket
will issued if stopped
again. Normally once a
traffic ticket is issued
another is not issued
the same day if the
vehicle and driver is
stopped by another unit
in the same delegation.
Last year 54 vehicles
driven by drunk drivers
were detained by
Tránsito officials
during the festival in
addition to issuing
2.130 tickets and
performing 1.300
breathalyzer tests.115"
