Buses To Clean Up Their Act
The Ministerio de Obras Públicas y Transportes (MOPT) has decided to clean up the public buses that circulate with all types of commercial messages. Viviana Martín, vice-minister of Transportes said the move is to avoid that the messages become a nuisance and avoid traffic accidents.

Martín added that the Consejo de Seguridad Vial (Cosevi) will make available within 15 days guidelines on the type and size of advertising that can be displayed on public buses, both inside and outside of the vehicles.

The vice-minister explained that some advertising has gotten out of hand, in some cases ads on buses display partially clad women, which are offensive to passengers and can cause accidents, distracting drivers.

"We have seen a growth in excessive advertising on buses, who are completely wrapped in commercials", said Martín, who added that bus operators are beginning to understand that this type of advertising can cause distractions and affect road safety.

Maritza Hernández, president of the Cámara de Autobuseros, recognizes a need for regulation.

Bus operators profit from allowing advertising displayed on their buses. Although Hernández could not say what the typical charge is for the ads, she did say that it does help bus operators to defray the cost of maintenance.
