Foul Weather Damaged Coffee Plants
The foul weather and strong winds of the past couple of weeks has been blamed for the damage sustained by 14.000 hectares of coffee fields, converting into a huge loss for growers, especially in high altitude areas.

According to Rodrigo Vargas, president of the Cámara de Cafetaleros de Costa Rica, the almost 100 Km/h winds caused much of the damage.

The areas most affected by the weather were Carrizal de Alajuela, Poás, Ceiba and San Isidro, as well as areas of 1.300 metres above seal level in Cartago.

Growers in the areas northwest of San José, San Ramón and Naranjo, for example, reported no damage.

The 14.000 hectares represents 18% of the total coffee production, which is estimated at 2.6 million bushels for the 2007-2008 harvest season.
