Ecuador Stricken by Floods
Ecuadorian government stepped up Tuesday's procedures to give attention to thousands of victims of the heavy rain that has provoked flooding and damage in six provinces.

The National Guard is resettling evacuated people in shelters while a list of homeless is being elaborated and damage to agriculture is verified.

Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa, who declared an emergency last week for the provinces of Guayas, Manabi, Los Rios, Santa Elena, El Oro and Esmeraldas, provided farmers the possibility to renegotiate their debts with the National Bank of Promotion. For that reason, officials from that entity are touring the areas affected by flooding to talk to farmers.

Another group is evaluating reconstruction projects and reinforcement of retaining walls as well as dredging of the Bulubulu and Chimbo Rivers, which overflowed because of the heavy rain of the last ten days.

The Minister of Economic and Social Inclusion (MIES) Janeth Sanchez announced delivery of 90 dollars bond to victims once the victims' list is elaborated.

Floods have destroyed over 40,000 hectares of arable land, of which 14,000 were for rice, sugar cane and cocoa in the provinces of Guayas, Los Rios and Esmeralda, according to late official reports.
