Violence in El Salvador Kills 28
Twenty eight Salvadorans were murdered last weekend, as violence escalated in the country, official sources confirmed.

However, the Ministry of Security pointed out that the homicide rate has dropped so far this year.

Security Minister Rene Figueroa explained that 271 murders were reported in January 2008, accounting for a 21-percent decrease, compared to the same period last year, when 341 people were murdered.

Statistics from the Legal Medicine Institute show that from 2004, when President Antonio Saca took office, to 2006, the number of murders increased from 2,933 to 3,928.

Some 3,550 murders were committed last year, an average of 9.8 deaths per day.

The Pan-American Health Organization said murders in El Salvador are an epidemic.
