Commissions to Meet in
La Paz

Senatorial commissions
from Bolivia and Chile
have agreed to meet on
Monday in La Paz to
address maritime issues,
road programs, and a
longstanding conflict on
bordering waters.
According to a Bolivian
Senate release, speaker
Tito Hoz de Vila will
head the local
delegation, while Jaime
Gazmuri will be leading
Chile´s.
Senators will also
discuss steps to develop
the mutual confidence
between two nations that
have no diplomatic
relations since 1962,
except for a brief
rapprochement between
1975-1978, under Hugo
Banzer´s dictatorship
with Pinochet´s.
Since President Evo
Morales' took office in
January, 2006, both
countries have
maintained a systematic
approach, in which
Bolivia´s demand for
access to the Pacific
Ocean is a priority in
the agenda.
Hoz de Vila said they
would tackle in the
meeting the problem of
the Silala's waters in
the Potosi department,
whose authorities want
Chilean companies to pay
a tax for using them.
Chilean senators want to
address poverty,
educational, scientific
and technological
policies.
