Price of Bread To Go
Down 10%
Good news for lovers of
bread as the price for a
loaf will soon drop,
thanks to a drop in the
price of flour on world
markets.
Eduardo Sibaja,
vice-minister of the
Economy, said that the
price of bread, cookies
and other baked
products, at the local
bakery could drop as
much as 10% due to the
lower cost of the raw
material.
Sibaja added that the
cost of flour goods has
shown a decrease of 22%
since August and could
go lower, at least 10%
more, he assured.
According to information
by the Ministerio de
Economía, Industria y
Comercio (MEIC), the
average cost of a
kilogram of flour is
¢420 colones or ¢21.800
for a 50 Kg sac.
Rafael Carrillo,
president of the Molinos
de Costa Rica, a main
supplier of flour in
Costa Rica confirmed
that a 10% decrease in
the cost of flour could
be a reality, but not in
the coming weeks as
Sibaja hinted, but
rather in the coming
months.
Carrillo added that in
February there could be
a price reduction and
questioned where the
MEIC minister got his
estimates for sooner.
The average price for a
loaf of bread is ¢250,
which could go down to
¢225 when the 10%
reduction takes effect.
