Gasoline Prices Take
Historic Nose Dive
For those not aware of
the latest drop in
gasoline prices will be
in for a pleasant
surprise next time they
fill the tank, as
gasoline prices made a
historic price drop at
the 12:01am today, one
day ahead of the
scheduled announcement.
The Autoridad Reguladora
de los Servicios
Públicos (Aresep) had
announced that the
publication of the
latest approval in the
official government
publication, La Gaceta,
would have occurred
today, instead it
occurred on Thursday.
Under the current
regulations, gasoline
prices changes take
effect at the gas pumps
the day following
publication.
At 12:01am today, a
litre of super gasoline
began selling for ¢488
colones, ¢152 less than
yesterday's price of
¢640; regular or Plus 91
now sells for ¢474, down
¢150 from yesterday's
¢624; and diesel sells
for ¢522, down ¢87 from
yesterday's ¢609.
The price of natural
gas, mainly used for
cooking in the majority
of Costa Rican kitchens,
also dropped ¢680
colones for a 8 litre
tank and ¢1.360 for a 17
litre tank. Aviation
fuel and kerosene also
drop in prices.
Today, the Refinadora
Costarricense de
Petróleo (Recope) - the
state refinery - is
expected to ask the
regulator for another
major decrease in
gasoline prices, this
time as ¢50 colones for
a litre of gasoline and
¢65 for diesel, which
would take effect next
month.
Today's reduction makes
a big difference to the
pocketbook, as it costs
¢6.840 colones less to
fill a 45 litre tank
with super.
In reality, what the
price reduction means to
the average Tico is that
¢5.000 colones of
gasoline in the tank
will now go further,
which will mean more
traffic on the already
congested roads,
especially during the
Christmas holiday.
According to Tránsito
(traffic) police, the
week before Christmas
downtown San Jose is
extremely congested -
more than normal - and
now with a major
gasoline price drop, the
situation will be even
worse.
