In proportion to its population, Costa Rica is in second place in Latin America as the country harboring the most number of refugees.

Costa Rica is currently home to 8.039 refugees, according to numbers released by the Dirección de Inmigración y Extranjería (immigration service) as of June 30, 2008.

Refugees in Costa Rica come from 38 countries, the largest group (6.500) are from Colombia,615 refugees are from Nicaragua and 531 are Cubans.
