Bean Producers Concerned
The food crisis that is affecting the world is beginning to be evident in Costa Rica as rice producers have asked Costa Rican president, Oscar Arias, to declare a state of emergency that would reactivate national production.

Although the posture is not official, bean producers are showing their concern of the future supply following the announcement by Nicaragua to regulate bean exports.

The neighbouring country is the supplier of 99% of all read beans imported. Costa Rica consumes on avarage 3.500 tons of beans a month.

Vincio Murillo, secretary general of the Unión de Productores Agropecuarios Independientes de Pérez Zeledón (UPIAV), the country could face a food crisis due to the measures applied by previous governments.

Murillo said that bean production in the country has reduced by 78% since the 90's, going from 69.000 hectares to 11.000 hectares in 2007.

"I cannot say we are joining the petition by the Conarroz as it would have to be by a consensus of all producers, but it is clear that the country needs to reactive its production", said Murillo.

Murillo considers that the current government to promote the growth of bean production in the country.
