Laura Is Arias' Pick For
President in 2010
Laura Chinchilla, Costa
Rica's vice-president
and minister of Justice,
is Costa Rican
president, Oscar Arias'
favourite for the 2010
presidential elections.
Arias has come out
publicly that he prefers
to have a woman replace
him once his term is
done and in the last
several days has made
flattering comments of a
possible Chinchilla
candidacy.
Although Chinchilla has
not publicly said she
would run, or is even
thinking of running, the
political buzz is that
she would make a great
first woman president.
Fernando Zumbado, a
minister in the Arias
administration, has been
the first to publicly
endorse a Chinchilla
candidacy, giving his
full support behind
Laura if and when she
decides to run.
Zumbado went on to say
publicly that a
Chinchilla candidacy for
the Partido Liberacion
Nacional (PLN) party is
already paved, all that
is needed now is for
Laura to announce her
decision to run.
Although president Arias
has not been as forward
as Zumbado, he has made
it clear that it is time
for Costa Rica to have a
woman president. In an
interview with the
Spanish language daily,
La Nación, on April 15,
Arias was quoted saying
that Laura is a woman
with a great calling to
public service and has
shown leadership,
responsibility and hard
work in all her public
positions.
A recent poll by Unimer
for La Nación shows that
Chinchilla scored the
highest in the public's
opinion of an government
official.
A possible contender to
Chinchilla for the PLN
presidential nomination
is San José mayor,
Johnny Araya. However,
public opinion polls
favour, for the moment,
Chinchilla.
