Taxi Fares Going Up
Although the Foro
Nacional de Taxistas
(taxi association) asked
for an 8% increase in
taxi fares, the
Autoridad Reguladora de
los Servicios Públicos (Aresep)
- government regulator -
approved a 10% hike.
With the approval, the
first kilometre will
increase by ¢40 colones
in all classes of taxis
- sedans, handicapped
and rural vehicles.
The approval is to give
the taxi operators a
chance to catch on the
devaluation, increase in
salaries and rise in
fuel costs between
January and September of
this year.
The Aresep allows the
taxi operators to modify
their taxi meters or "marias"
as they are popularly
known as in Costa Rica,
and that the rate
increase does not
distinguish a day or
night fare, as as was
common in the past, and
still applied by some
taxi drivers, where they
will add on 20% for
night fares.
Gilberth Díaz, a
spokesperson for the
Foro said that the
increase will allow taxi
operators to offer
better service.
The new rates will go
into effect once the
approval is published in
the official government
publication, La Gaceta,
which is expected next
week.
