Peru welcomes
Venezuela's attempt to
return to Andean
Community
Peruvian President Alan
Garcia on Saturday
welcomed Venezuela's
decision to consider
returning to the Andean
Community of Nations
(CAN).
Garcia made the remarks
during his visit to the
southern city of Pisco
which was hardest hit by
the mid-August
earthquake, calling it
"a good news."
Although Venezuela
differs with some CAN
member states on how to
deal with certain
international issues,
this will not affect
Andean nations' efforts
to promote regional
cooperation via the
Andean Community trade
bloc, the Peruvian
president said.
During his visit to
Colombia on Friday,
Venezuelan President
Hugo Chavez said that he
could possibly attend
the next Andean
Community summit and put
forward some reform
advice and suggestions
at the meeting to create
favorable conditions for
Venezuela's return to
the trade bloc.
CAN is a regional trade
organization in Latin
America that groups
Bolivia, Colombia,
Ecuador and Peru.
Last April, Chavez
pulled Venezuela out of
the group to protest
Peru and Colombia's
signing of free trade
agreements with the
United States, saying
such moves violated
CAN's principles and
were harmful to the
Venezuelan economy.
