Venezuela, Colombia Work
on Peace Agreement
Venezuela is today the
prospect core of a peace
agreement in Colombia,
after President Hugo
Chavez assumed the
responsibility of acting
as the facilitator of a
humanitarian agreement,
which is complicated but
promising.
The expectation centers
on the possibility to
hold meetings in this
capital, with
representatives of the
Colombian Revolutionary
Armed Forces and the
National Liberation
Army.
The possibility
expressed in Colombia by
Chavez, after meeting
with that country's
President Alvaro Uribe,
was well received among
Colombians living in
Venezuela, although with
some reserve, due to
constant frustrations.
In a meeting to support
those actions, held in
front of Colombia s
Consulate to Venezuela,
Jaime Chavarro,
international
responsible for the
Alternative Democratic
Pole, said he was
confident that the
negotiation favors a
more comprehensive
process.
For Chavarro, there is a
possibility that the
release of prisoners
from both sides becomes
a step towards direct
dialogues to solve the
internal war by peaceful
means.
Chavez' actions, which
started with a request
to favor a humanitarian
agreement to release
people detained by the
FARC, broadens even more
its perspectives, with
the announcement of
possible talks in
Caracas with both
guerrilla groups.
Something that favors
the process is that the
Venezuelan president is
a facilitator that both
sides trust, as the
insurgents' answers have
shown and the Colombian
government has stated. |
