Venezuelan Authorities
Reject Opposition
Violence
Violent actions of
opposition groups
contrary to the project
of Constitutional reform
were rejected by
Venezuerlan authorities,
set on promoting
dialogue in every field.
Pedro Carreno, minister
of the Interior and
Justice, expressed the
government s negative to
accept vandalic deeds in
the high education
centers of the country.
Under these conditions,
he called on university
authorities to fight
violent acts committed
during the protests when
the initiative to change
the Charter proposed by
President Hugo Chavez.
The project will be
submitted to referendum
next December 2,
according to the summons
emitted by the National
Electoral Council after
receiving the text
approved by Parliament.
The opposition
university students will
be allowed to
demonstrate as long as
they ask for permission
and commit to keep order
in tose acts, said
Carreno, who added that
the right to voice
opinión ends when
violence begins.
In that sense, the role
of university
authorities in Venezuela
in the face of violent
actions puts them under
the eye of authorities
and their posible link
to subversive plans.
Among the most relevant
actions was the clash
between gangs at Zulia
University that left two
dead and the harassment
at the Central
University of Venezuela
(UCV) on groups that
support constitutional
reform.
The Venezuelan Vice
President Jorge
Rodríguez considered
suspicious the support
of the United States to
the violent student
demonstrations linked to
opposition parties of
the South American
