Schools Open, But Teachers To Strike On Wednesday
More than 50.000 teachers will go on strike tomorrow in a strike action called by the teachers association, the Asociación Nacional de Educadores (ANDE), according to José Antonio Barquero, president of ANDE.

The reasons for the strike action are to paralyze the country's schools in protest of the Ministerio de Educación Público (MEP) for not resolving the issue of pay, the problems in teacher appointments and the recent student violence.

Barquero explained that there is a lack of infrastructure in education. "There are teachers working and students attending classes in community halls or in the open, exposed to the elements", said Barquero, who added that the situation should not be so.

For tomorrow's strike, teachers are being asked to show up for work as usual, but not hold any classes.

The union leader added that the dialogue with the MEP of last week was in vain and there is an urgent need to find a solution to the problems which are now to the detriment of the teachers and students.

"Enough with the injustices, we don't believe anymore in the promises of minister Leonardo Garnier. This is a first step, if the situation continues we will take more drastic actions", said Barquero.

ANDE will give the MEP the balance of this month to normalize the situation and solve the problems of the thousands of the affected teachers.

The work stoppage tomorrow is set to start at 7:00am and will be ending at 5:00pm.
