Slower Increase of Pineapples
Exports in 2007
Tholen – Last year Costa Rican
exports of pineapple achieved a
32% increase due to the
enlargement of the EU.
In 2007 the expectations are a
15% increase. Abel Chaves,
president of the association of
the Pineapple Chamber of
Producers and Exporters argues
that this slower increase is
normal given the current market
stabilization.
He calculates on 1.38 million
tons the exports in 2007 in
comparison to the 1.17 million
tons in 2006 (source System of
Market Information – SIM).
In value, it represented US$430
million (32% more than 2005). In
fresh produce, pineapples is the
second exporting good from Costa
Rica (bananas are first).
The main destinations are the US
and the EU, both with a 50%
market share. In the US, Costa
Rica is the leading exporting
country with 83% of the market
share followed by Guatemala and
Ecuador with 5% each.
