"I Knew He Had Killed
Her", Maureen's Mother

In the second day of
trial, the mother of
Maureen Hidalgo
testifying against her
son in law,
accused of killing
his wife, told
the court of the jealous
and violent nature of
Luis Fernando Burgos.
"I sent him a message to
ask him if he wanted to
be part of the funeral
to see what his reaction
would be to have her
close. The way he
reacted gave me the
answer and his
indifference is what
told me, yes it was
him", were the words of
Vera Mora.
Maureen's mother also
told the court of how a
woman named Rojas when
authorities found
Maureen's body, letting
him know that he was no
longer part of the
family. "I told him I
knew he had killed her".
His replied with "I will
not shed a tear because
those f**** reporters
all they want to see me
is cry. At no time did
he express any pain he
felt. It was like
someone when he could
cry and when not", said
Mora.
Maureen's father, Miguel
Hidalgo, followed with
his testimony relating
his relationship with
Burgos and how his son
in law was ashamed of
him being poor. "For the
wedding Luis could not
accept how I am, because
I went in sandals and he
sent me a pair of shoes,
later to learn they were
used. I felt bad because
all his favourites were
sat next to him and we
were left to last", said
Hidalgo.
On Monday, the first day
of trial, a former
girlfriend and co-worker
of Burgos, Zulay Rojas,
testified that Burgos
had admitted to her,
hours after the murder,
that he had killed his
wife. Rojas told the
judges that on the night
of July 11, 2006, Burgos
went to her apartment
and told her he had done
something terribly
wrong.
Burgos, who was a fiscal
(prosecutor) denied to
give testimony at the
beginning of trial,
telling the judges that,
on the advice of his
lawyer, would withhold a
statement until he had
heard all the evidence
against him after the
president of the court
cautioned him that his
silence could only be
interpreted as one of
guilt.
In yesterday's
proceedings cameras and
recorders were not
allowed into the
courtroom.
The trial continues
today with more
testimony from Maureen's
family as that drops of
incrimination continue
to fall on the man who
maintained his innocence
of killing his wife.
