Water Shortage Predicted
For the Central Valley
in 8 Years
AlthWough water was
considered an
inexhaustible resource
the Servicio Nacional de
Riego y Avenamiento (Senara)
warns that in eight
years the central Valley
may see a shortage of at
least 15% of the
precious liquid.
Senara says that
presently more water is
drawn from the sources
that will place at risk
the distribution of
water to 60% of the
population in the
Central Valley which now
get their water from the
Barva adn Colima sources
in the province of
Heredia.
A study by Senara shows
that the Barva and
Calima recharge capacity
is measured at 9.720
litres per second while
9.870 litres per second
is being extracted.
Experts say that these
water sources are major
importance to the supply
of water for the
population in Alajuela,
Heredia and San José.
"At this time there is
an abuse of the water
resource. The growth in
population has already
reached the recharge
capacity", said Bernal
Mora, general manager of
Senara.
Mora was clear in his
warning that, according
to projections, by 2015
there will be a 15%
shortfall in the supply
at Colima, which will
affect the Central
Valley.
According to Mora the
shortage of water supply
in some parts of Heredia
is due to current
abuses.
