Guatemala to Compensate Hostage Families
Victims families of the attack and fire of the Spanish embassy in Guatemala will be awarded with an economic compensation 27 years after the events happened, report media in this capital Monday.

Rosalina Tuyuc, president of the National Commission of Compensation assured that from the 37 already dead 25 families had been registered with the view to give them 24 thousands quetzals (about 3,200 dollars) as compensation.

The figure is similar to the one allocated to the victims of the Guatemalan armed conflict (1960-1996), declared the official.

On that date in 1980 a group of farmers from the northwestern department of Quiche supported by union members and humanitarian leaders occupied the Spanish embassy and detained the workers, diplomatic staff and others.

The objective was to call the international Public opinion s attention on the atrocities committed by the Guatemalan army in the region.
