Nicaragua Church Agrees to
Abortion Debate
The Nicaraguan Catholic Church,
principal promoter to restore
the controversial penal code
prohibiting therapeutic abortion
in life-threatening pregnancies
or those from rape or incest,
agreed to discuss the topic on
Monday.
Bismarck Conde, Vicar of the
Cathedral of Managua, said the
Episcopal Conference confirmed
an open congress with
specialists and doctors, not as
a change in Church stance, but
to determine what is best for
the lives of mother and child.
Chile, El Salvador and Malta are
the only countries in the world
to ban abortion in all cases.
With the return to power of the
Sandinista National Liberation
Front, which deputies had voted
to overturn the prohibition, new
Health Minister Maritza Quant
pronounced in favor of
decriminalizing abortion.
