Nicaragua Trims Fat State
Paychecks
A salary cut of high position
posts in the Nicaraguan State
department proposed by
Sandinista deputies represents a
yearly saving of up to 30
million cordobas (1.6 million
dollars).
The bill presented Friday to
Parliament establishes a maximum
of three thousand dollars a
month for legislators,
magistrates, attorneys, district
attorneys and other high
officials of the state.
According to a deputy of the
Sandinista Front of National
Liberation (FSLN), Gustavo
Porras, the proposal is based on
a decree issued last Monday by
President Daniel Ortega, through
which his cabinet members will
have their salaries reduced.
As part of the measure, the
President of the Republic will
now receive three thousand 200
dollars a month, the highest
within the government.
The salary Ortega will receive
is half the more than six
thousand dollars a month his
predecessor, Enrique Bolanos,
received who also had benefits
in the form of cars and other
bonuses charged to the State.
These were also eliminated.
