Guatemala Hails Menchu Candidature
Guatemalan press and political analysts highlighted the approval greeting indigenous leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner, Rigoberta Menchu s announcement that she will be a candidate in the September presidential elections.

Prensa Libre daily s editorial highlighted Thursday that Menchu s candidature, agreed after weeks of negotiation between Winaq movement and EG (Encuentro por Guatemala) party, is a new element in national politics.

It also points out that the greatest challenge for that alliance is to gain the youth vote, as it could be a decisive factor in the elections.

Analyst Jose Carlos Sanabria considers Menchu s aspiration will allow the country to overcome a triple inequality, as she is a woman, a native, and a representative from the rural area.

This new choice will allow analysis of how much progress Guatemala has achieved in fighting racism and inequality, Sanabria stated.
