Peru, Venezuela reestablish
diplomatic relations
Peru and Venezuela have agreed
to reestablish diplomatic
relations and exchange
ambassadors, Peru's foreign
ministry said on Friday.
According to a statement,
Peruvian President Alan Garcia
has appointed Luis Santa Maria
as ambassador to Caracas,
Venezuela's capital. Maria will
take up the post on March 1.
The governments of Peru and
Venezuela fell out last year
after Venezuelan President Hugo
Chavez openly backed Ollanta
Humala, Garcia's opponent,
during the run-up to Peru's May
elections.
Chavez traded insults with
then-presidential candidates
Alan Garcia of the Peru Aprist
Party and Lourdes Flores of the
National Unity Party, as well as
then president Alejandro Toledo.
As a result, Toledo withdrew the
Peruvian ambassador from
Caracas.
In December, Garcia and Chavez
met on the sidelines of the
second summit of the South
American Community of Nations.
They agreed to leave their
squabbling behind and signed a
document on restoring diplomatic
relations.
