Fifty Injured in Bus Accident
A bus full of holiday travellers on the way to Limón from San José flipped on its side injuring 50 passengers, fortunately none seriously and no deaths. The accident occurred at 10:59am on kilometre 77 of the carretera Saopin, one kilometre from centre Guácimo de Limón.

The driver of the bus told traffic officials that a vehicle ahead of suddenly put on his brakes and he swerved and the bus flipped in his attempt to avoid colliding with vehicle ahead of him.

The Policía del Tránsito, in their report, indicate that the accident occurred in a stretch of road which is undergoing repairs.

Traffic police say that speeding could have contributed to the accident, along with the wet road conditions at the time.

The bus flipped over on its side, sliding on the pavement and finally resting across the entire roadway forcing its closure for several hours.

The slightly injured were taken to nearby clinics, while the more severely injured to the local hospitals for medical attention.

The Cruz Roja (Red Cross) says that most of the injuries were cuts and bruises to the arms and legs and most of the patients taken to hospital were in "yellow" condition, none with life threatening injuries.

The bus, 2007 Mercedes Benz with 5 passenger capacity, is owned and operated by the Guapileños bus line and was driven by an "experienced" driver who has no accidents to his record, according to bus company officials.

Last Tuesday another accident involving a bus, on the autopista General Cañas at the San Antonio de Belén exit, where two buses collided, left 25 passengers injured. In that accident, the careless driving of one of the bus drivers was the cause of the accident.
