Drinking and Driving a "Tico' Custom
For those who think that the Policía de Tránsito (traffic police) are taking time off for the holidays will be in for a surprise if they are found drinking and driving.

Germán Marín has promised a hard line approach this year in an attempt to curb traffic fatalities, the highest cause is drunk driving and speeding/reckless driving.

This is a time of celebration and parties where drinking is a part.

The Policía de Tránsito want to curb the "Tico" tradition of going over the limit and then getting behind the wheel of a vehicle and in more than one case daily resulting in a traffic accident and fatalities.

Dozens of drivers over the 0.49 legal limit are stopped every day is different spot checks around the country, more found to be between 0.50 and .099 a condition subject to a ¢10.000 colones fine.

Even more were found to be over the 0.99 limit, who face double the fine and the confiscation of the vehicle.

In total this weekend 40 drunk drivers were taken off the roads.
