To Counter Global
Warming
The Ministry of the
Environment announced
that 1.5 million native
trees have already been
planted as part of the
efforts to “cool down”
global warming.
Also, Minister Roberto
Dobles disclosed that
guidelines to generate
electricity using
methane from decaying
trash in landfills are
to be issued in coming
weeks, as are steps to
use bio-fuels in public
transportation.
The second initiative is
aimed at lowering
emissions from
transport, which
currently account for 29
percent of carbon
dioxide emissions in
Costa Rica.
Also, ten organizations,
ranging from banana
growers to universities,
signed a document to
become carbon-dioxide
free, meaning they will
lower their emissions
and compensate for those
which are not eliminated
by planting trees. |
