Founder of ICE To be
Awarded Benemeritazgo
Jorge Manuel Dengo
Obregón may soon be
awarded the "Benemeritazgo
de la Patria"
(meritorious of service)
by the Legislative
Assembly.
Among his public works,
Dengo is responsible for
the creation of the
Instituto Costarricense
de Electricidad (ICE) on
April 8, 1949, becoming
its first general
manager until 1960.
Dengo is son of educator
Omar Dengo who was also
director of the
Fertilizantes de
Centroamérica (Fertica)
and vice-president of
the Banco
Centroamericano de
Integración Económica (BCIE).
Jorge Manuel Dengo
Obregón is also
considered the pulse
behind the creation of
the Comisión Nacional de
Emergencias (CNE) and
the Escuela de
Agricultura de la Región
del Trópico Húmedo
(Earth) and was co-ordinator
of the Consejo Economico
in the Luis Alberto
Monge administration.
For legislator Fernando
Sánchez, Costa Rica
should honour Dengo for
his public work and
contributions and is
behind the motion to
give thanks to the 89
year old man converting
him into one of Costa
Rica's favoured sons.
