The Mas x Menos
supermarket chain may
soon do away with all
plastic bags, replacing
them with biodegradable
bags.
The pilot program began
at the Novacentro Mas x
Menos and may soon
spread to all Mas x
Menos, Maxibodegas, Palí
and Hipermas stores, all
owned by Wal-Mart Costa
Rica.
The new bags are made of
corn and other organic
ingredients that
decompose in a shorter
time and convert to
organic material.
Poliplásticos is
producing the
biodegradable bags and
announced that it will
begin production this
week on containers for
Monteverde for its cream
cheese products. The new
product is called "d2w"
and is also environment
friendly.
For the time being the
biodegradable grocery
bags are available at
Novacentro that has a
stock of 60.000 bags.
The same technology is
currently in use in
Brazil and Argentina.
