To Have Overpasses, MOPT
MInister Announces
The Ministerio de Obras
Públicas y Transportes (MOPT)
continues with its
program to build more
bridges along the
Circunvalación - the
ring road on the south
side of San José - with
the announcement of the
construction of an
overpass at the
Alajuelita and Paso
Ancho rotondas.
The rotonda at Y Griega/Desamparados
was the first to see an
overpass, reducing
congestion at the busy
intersection. The San
Sebastián rotunda was
the second intersection
to see get an overpass.
Work on that
intersection is
continuing, with the
first half of the bridge
opened to traffic last
week.
MOPT minister, Karla
González, signed an
agreement with
Corporación Andina de
Fomento (CAF) who will
fund the project with
us$582.000 dollars,
which amount, according
to the minister, is not
repayable as it is a
kind of special donation
that will be used to
design and build the
overpasses.
At the announcement
ceremony, present was
Lucia Meza, director of
projects for the CAF,
along with other members
of the Corporación.
As well, technical
experts of the CAF, will
be making a tour of the
Caribbean zone to
evaluate other possible
projects it can finance,
primarily the
construction of a bridge
at the Sixaola river.
The CAF says it will
also be visiting the
project "Bajos de
Chilamate-Vuelta Kopper"
in the northern zone, a
27 kilometre road that
has eight bridges being
financed by the Andina
corporation.
Minister González also
informed that she has
ordered to begin
construction of the
1.7km road between San
Francisco de Dos Rios
and La Colina, widening
the road from two to
four lanes.
In the coming weeks,
minister González, said
that work will also
begin on the 5.1 km
stretch of road between
Moravia and Coronado,
which will also be
widened from 2 to 4
lanes.
As to the San Sebastián
tunnel work, the MOPT
minister, says that the
work should be completed
not later than December
and that the final cost
of the construction will
be us$3.5 million
dollars. |
