Baby found alive in
ruins 7 hours after
quake in Peru
A 10-month-old boy was
found alive in the ruins
of a collapsed church
seven hours after an
earthquake leveled Pisco,
the Peruvian port city,
according to media
reports Monday.
Pisco, one of the cities
hit bitterly by
Wednesday's powerful
earthquake, lost 85
percent of its houses.
"It was a miracle that
he had survived so many
hours breathing only
dust and death," said
Romulo Palomino who
found the baby.
Palomino said he was
searching for his
parents in the ruins of
the San Clemente church
when he discovered the
infant in a pile of
broken timbers.
"Finding this little one
alive is a comfort that
I will take with me for
the rest of my life," he
said.
The infant's parents
have not been located or
identified.
"I'm taking care of him
with the little I have,
but he needs milk and
clothes," said
Palomino's wife. The
couple's house was
destroyed in the quake.
The earthquake measuring
7.9 on the Richter scale
left at least 510 people
dead, 1,610 injured and
16,600 families
homeless.
