Panama to Build Torrijos-Carter
Park
Several buildings that
had housed US military
facilities in the
ancient canal region
began to be demolished
on Wednesday to be
transformed into a
recreational area to be
called "Torrijos-Carter
Park."
It will be a space of
free access where
Panamanian people and
foreign visitors will be
able to learn about an
important part of
national history, the
Presidency of the
Republic reported.
The park will pay
tribute to the deceased
former President General
Omar Torrijos and to
former US President
James Carter, who
managed to end almost a
century of tensions on
the territory US troops
occupied in the Region
of Canal.
The new area is expected
to be inaugurated
September 7, disclosed
during an act on the
26th anniversary of the
death of former leader,
in which his son and
current President Martin
Torrijos spoke,
affirming that "Torrijas
ideals are still
present" and they are
perceived in several
