Nicaragua, Laos Resume
Diplomatic Ties
Nicaragua and Laos have resumed
diplomatic relations,
Nicaragua's Foreign minister
Samuel Santos said Friday.
A Laos delegation headed by
Foreign minister Thongloune
Sisoulith was visiting Nicaragua
and was warmly welcomed by
Nicaraguan President Daniel
Ortega.
Also on Friday, the two sides
signed two agreements, Santos
said.
One of the accords was aimed at
boosting exchanges between the
foreign ministries of the two
countries and mutual support for
each other, and the other one
was designed to promote "work in
the south-south concept and form
a bilateral commission to
negotiate the accords necessary
to benefit both countries,"
Santos said.
Nicaragua and Laos established
diplomatic relations in 1979.
The diplomatic ties were broken
in 1990 when Violeta Chamorro
became Nicaraguan president.
"In reality these relations have
never been broken between the
peoples of Nicaragua and Laos.
They have passed through
difficult times. They have been
firm," Ortega said.
Ortega said both Nicaragua and
Laos have worked hard to achieve
progress and enjoy real economic
and social sovereignty by
eradicating poverty.
