ICE To Move
Forward With Plans For Internet Television
Service
The Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad
(ICE) will soon be offering television
programming by way of the internet. IPTV
(Internet Protocol Television) is a system
where a digital television service is
delivered using Internet Protocol over a
broadband connection.
According to an ICE spokesperson, national
and international programming will be
offered.
Althoguh details were not given, usually
residential users of IPTV are often provided
in conjunction with Video on Demand and may
be bundled with Internet services such as
Web access and VoIP.
IPTV is possible following the Contraloría
General de la República (Comptroller's
office) rejection of appeals against ICE
awarding the contract to ITS Servicios de
Infocomunicación S.A for us$19 million
dollars.
The companies ZTE Corporation and Consorcio
DESCA-ATL appealed the awarding of the
contract, stalling ICE's implementation of
the IPTV service.
ICE's president, Pedro Pablo Quirós,
displayed satisfaction on the Contraloría
decision, saying that the plan for internet
television can no move forward and could be
operations by the end of this year.
