More Venezuelan Oil to El Salvador

San Salvador -  Farabundo Marti Liberation Front (FMLN) leader Medardo González on Sunday said Venezuela will increase its oil supply to El Salvador when President-elect Mauricio Funes takes office on June 1st.

According to Gonzalez, the agreement may be signed on the same day of Funes' presidential inauguration. Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is expected to attend the ceremony, along with dozens of heads of state from around the world.

The agreement will help increase oil supplies already benefitting the country's capital San Salvador through the FMLN mayor's office and the ALBANISA joint venture.

The current agreement states that $0.40 out of every dollar paid by El Salvador to Venezuela is to be invested in social programmes in the Central American nation.

Gonzalez said Venezuela could increase current oil supply up to 10,000 barrels a day.

El Salvador may also received medical assistance from Venezuela, particularly with the Operation Miracle, which provides free eye care to low-income and poor families.

Funes visited Venezuela last week, and thanked Chavez for helping El Salvador face the global economic crisis.
