Concern for Colombia HR Workers
United Nations - The UN Refugee Agency
has expressed deep concern over the wave of
death threats against humanitarian workers
and human rights organizations in Colombia.
According to a declaration issued there by
the Office of the UN High Commissioner for
Refugees (UNHCR), the national office of the
People's Ombudsman is among those
threatened.
UN Spokesman Andrew Purvis said in Geneva on
Friday that intimidation against indigenous
communities, social leaders, and
representatives of displaced groups have
increased in recent months.
In some cases, the victims of those attacks
have been forced to leave their communities
looking for security, while others have been
killed, he added.
Survivors, their families and friends say
nothing about it, fearing reprisal attacks.
The UNHCR strongly condemns those acts, and
is deeply worried, because illegal groups
operating in Colombia in recent years are
another factor behind forced displacement.
According to UN statistics, there are as
many as 3 million people displaced in
Colombian.
A dozen UNHCR offices operate in the country
to protect those displaced, support aid
efforts for them, and look to find long-term
solutions.
