Bolivia, US for Mending Diplomatic Ties
La Paz - Bolivia and the United States on
Wednesday will try to mend their diplomatic
relations, almost severed since September
2008, with a visit by a top-level US
delegation led by Thommas Shannon, Assistant
Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere
Affairs. Shannon arrived in this capital on
Tuesday night for a meeting with Bolivian
Foreign Minister David Choquehuanca.
According to Choquehuanca, the meeting had
been agreed upon with US Secretary of State
Hillary Clinton at the Trinidad and Tobago
Summit of the Americas in April.
"We are going to negotiate relations. We
want to draw up a new framework for ties
between La Paz and Washington. So far, our
links have been lined by the 1951
agreements," the Bolivian official said.
Diplomatic relations between the two
countries were almost severed last
September, after President Evo Morales
expelled US Ambassador to La Paz, Phillip
Goldberg, on conspiracy charges.
The administration of the then President
George W. Bush in turn expelled Bolivian
ambassador Gustavo Guzman, and suspended
Bolivia of its Andean Trade Promotion and
Drug Eradication Act.
Other issues to be addressed at today's
meeting between Shannon and Choquehuanca are
drug trafficking, and the case of former
President Gonzalo Sanchez de Lozada
(2002-2003) and two of his ministers, whose
extradition from the United States is
requested by La Paz.
