Venezuelan Media on the Carpet
Caracas, - Venezuelan Comptroller of the
Republic Clodosbaldo Russian asserted on
Tuesday that private media in that nation
are behaving like political parties.
In remarks to Venezolana de Television,
Russian said there is too much freedom of
speech in the country and recalled the
severe restrictions on reporting under
former, presumably democratic, governments.
The current situation is unprecedented, he
said, with politically belligerent media and
acting like a party, without receiving
sanctions.
"Those having radio and TV concessions must
respect regulations and the Constitution. It
is not that you have a concession and then
do whatever you please with it," he
stressed.
He said further that much of the information
transmitted today distorts the nation's
reality and causes people to believe that
they are at war.
President Chavez recently called on the
private media to respect the law, and warned
that steps would be taken if they continue
their hate-filled distorting attacks.
Foreign Minister and Vice President of the
United Socialist Party of Venezuela Nicolas
Maduro also urged private media to end their
terrorist campaign against the government
and to respect the people, and he accused
Globovision of sowing racism, class hatred
and disdain toward democratic institutions.
