More Swine Flu Cases in Panama
15 people have been confirmed with swine flu
in Panama. 12 newly confirmed cases were
announced on Sunday.
"These 12 cases can be broken down as
follows; eight correspond to direct contact
with the first case, two from indirect
contact with the first case, and one case
who says they made contact with a foreigner
who was traveling en route from Mexico, and
another case who had made contact with
someone from the United States."
As a preventative measure, Panama's health
ministry has been offering free seasonal flu
vaccinations to children under the age of
five, the elderly and those suffering from
diabetes.
"I congratulate the health ministry firstly
because this is an important measure and we
must all be vaccinated. It's better to avoid
than to cure."
A Washington state man with AH1N1 influenza
died last week. It’s the third U.S. American
to die as the new flu strain confirmed in
more than 2,200 Americans appeared in Japan
and Australia.
Health officials have warned that the true
number of cases may be underestimated.
Although most cases appear to be mild, the
new swine flu strain has killed just as
seasonal flu does.
Another 48 people have died in Mexico and
one each in Canada and Costa Rica. |
