Guatemala - Women Redefining Democracy for
Peace, Justice and Equality Conference
begins in Antigua, Guatemala Sunday, with
some 130 women delegates attending, four of
them Nobel Prize winners.
The activist for indigenous rights in
Guatemala Rigoberta Menchu Tum , a Mayan
from Guatemala who won the Nobel Peace Prize
in 1992 will be hostess of this meeting,
along with the sponsorship of the Rigoberta
Menchu Tum Foundation, FRMT.
Other Nobel Prize winners like Irish Mairead
Maguire (1976), US Jody Williams (1997) and
Iranian Shirin Ebadi (2003) are also
present.
They will be all together debating for three
days with women rights defenders,
researchers and politic activists from
several places of the world.
This is the second forum of the type,
organized by the Nobel Peace Prize Laureates
of the Nobel Women's Initiative and the
organization Just Associates, JASS-Asociadas
por lo Justo) "Asociadas por lo Justo",
after the one held in Galway, Ireland in
2007 over the Middle East.
This conference is mainly focused on
analyzing the current global challenges of
democracy and the democratization, FRMT
sources said.
Women fight for democracy, activism and the
struggle of women in situations of conflict,
post conflict and militarism are some of the
issues high on the agenda of the meeting.
They will also tackle other topics like
media and communications, giving voice to
women and to their perspectives, as well as
new strategies for the future: creating a
significant democracy for women, peace and
justice.
Those women participant are aimed at
identifying solutions and alternative models
that give rise to a truly democratic change,
FRMT says. |
