Hopeful Araya Denouncing Dirty Politics By
the Chinchilla Camp
The campaign for the leadership of the
Partido Liberación Nacional (PLN) is heating
as the June 7 convention nears, where San
Jose former mayor, Johnny Araya; former
Costa Rican vice-president, Laura
Chinchilla; and former Seguridad minister,
Fernando Berrocal, all vie for the shot at
being president next year.
Araya and Chinchilla are the frontrunners in
the race, with Berrocal lagging way behind.
Friday, Araya complained of dirty politics,
blaming the Chinchilla camp for attacks
against him, questioning the print, radio
and television ads, where his rival
highlights her links to the current Arias
government and being part of the good deeds
of the current administration.
Araya, in front of "Chelles", the popular
restaurant on Avenida Central, the former
mayor denounced the dirty politicking of
Chinchilla.
The Código Electoral (Elections Code)
prohibits the current administration to
detail reached objectives after October 1
during an election year.
For Araya he is of the opinion that Casa
Presidencial should suspend immediately
their propaganda and said would seek legal
remedy in the event the current propaganda
campaign continues.
JOhnny Araya also said that dirty
campaigning is being allowed by way of paid
space in the Spanish language daily, La
Nación. The full page ad was paid for a
"concerned" citizen, one who Araya qualifies
as a "militant liberationist". The ad asks
Araya to publicly explain his relationship
to former president, Rafael Ángel Calderón
(1990-1994) who is expected to run for the
Unidad leadership once his trial for fraud
and embezzlement is over.
Araya denied any predsent relationship with
the former president.
