Guatemala = The announcement of Japanese
multinational Fujifilm that it would lay off
or transfer 5,000 employees of its plants
worldwide is causing concern in Guatemala,
the venue of one of these plants.
Several businesses based in this country are
cutting jobs to face the fall in sales, with
those in agricultural, industrial and
constructive sectors laying off 25,440
workers in 2008, according to the Guatemalan
Social Security Institute.
Other bodies estimate at 55,000 the number
of workers laid off last year in all the
country's economic fields, contradicting the
experts' view that this was compensated by
an increase of 16,545 workers in fields of
trades and services.
The Institute said the largest job cuts were
reported in businesses based in the
departments of Guatemala, Escuintla,
Sacatepequez, Quetzaltenango, Suchitepequez,
Huehuetenango, Alta Verapaz and Zacapa. |
