This Semana Santa With "Three" Legal Holiday Days

Semana Santa is a week for Costa Ricans to take time off work and enjoy the last few days of the dry or summer weather before the rainy season commences. This year, however, due to the April 11 holiday, the number of paid holiday days equals to three and the typical two.

Let us explain.

Although government employees have the entire week off, and many companies closed down as well, the only two legal "paid" holidays during Semana Santa is Thursday and Friday.

However, this year, the April 11 holiday - a legal holiday - honouring the heroic efforts of Juan Santamaría, falls within Semana Santa, thus extending the number of legal holidays to three in one week.

Employers cannot force an employee to work on April 11 and for those employees who agree to work on the holiday will be paid double salary.

Since the holiday falls on a weekend, it is celebrated on the day it falls. All other legal holidays falling on a Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday are moved to the following Monday.

All this according to the Código de Trabajo (Labour Code).
